The MAGUS Lum 400 fluorescence microscope is designed for diagnostics and research and can be used for fluorescence (reflected light) and brightfield (transmitted light) microscopy. With additional equipment, polarization, darkfield and phase-contrast techniques can also be used. Applications of the fluorescence microscope include DNA analysis, pathogen studies, health and epidemiological surveillance, forensic examination, etc.

Optics

This is a trinocular microscope: the binocular head is inclined at 30°, and the digital camera (not included) is installed on the trinocular tube. The eyepiece tubes can be rotated by 360°, making them easy to adjust to the user's height.

Five objectives can be installed in the revolving nosepiece. Four infinity-corrected plan achromatic objectives are included. One of them is a fluorescent objective with 40x magnification, designed for fluorescence observations. The 4x, 10x and 100x objectives are used for brightfield microscopy. An additional objective can be mounted in the available slot in the revolving nosepiece to achieve higher magnification within the microscope's magnification range.

The revolving nosepiece faces inward, allowing the user to see which objective is in the optical path.

Illumination

The reflected-light source is a 100 W mercury-vapor lamp. It is housed in a lamp housing that dissipates heat efficiently, so the lamp does not overheat even after many hours of operation. The lamp can be centered along three axes to provide optimal illumination of the working area. If it needs to be replaced, simply remove and install it. The mercury-vapor lamp is suitable for fluorescent pigments because they have distinct peaks. The reflected-light illuminator contains four excitation filters: ultraviolet (UV), violet (V), blue (B) and green (G).

Transmitted-light source: 30 W halogen lamp. It has sufficient intensity to work with any objective, regardless of magnification. Thanks to the illumination's color temperature, even prolonged observations do not strain the eyes. The illumination system also includes a condenser. There is a slot for a slider (phase contrast or darkfield).

The Köhler illumination method can be set for transmitted and reflected light. With this illumination method, the edges do not darken, the specimen is clearly visible, and the image is free of artifacts.

Stage and focusing mechanism

The microscope is equipped with an ergonomic stage without a positioning rack. For reflected-light observations, a black plate must be placed on the stage to reduce any unwanted light. If necessary, the specimen holder plate can be removed by loosening two screws. The focusing knobs are coaxial and located on both sides of the microscope. The coarse focusing mechanism has a locking knob and tension adjustment; fine focusing is used to adjust sharpness.

Accessories

The MAGUS Lum 400 microscope can be equipped with additional accessories: a digital camera, phase-contrast device, polarization device, darkfield condenser, eyepieces and objectives, and a phase-contrast and darkfield slider. If objects need to be measured, the microscope can be equipped with a calibration slide.
