Immersion oil is required as an immersion medium for a 100x immersion objective. Without this oil, it is possible to obtain sharp, high-resolution images. To achieve an aperture of 1.25, the condenser must also be immersed (for brightfield). For darkfield, special oil darkfield condensers must be used.
