Ethicon's non-absorbable natural silk sutures are designed for sutures and ligatures of vessels and soft tissues, including applications in cardiovascular, plastic, and ophthalmic surgery. Silk causes an acute inflammatory reaction in the tissue, followed by a gradual encapsulation of the suture by connective tissue fibers. Despite being non-absorbable, silk degrades in vivo, with a gradual loss of tensile strength over time. Therefore, it is not recommended for applications that require permanent tensile strength.

The sutures undergo a Perma-Hand dewaxing process and are stained black with a special wax mixture. The exclusive Perma-Hand production process, which involves dewaxing the raw thread before braiding, guarantees a purified suture and a uniform caliber. The compactness of the weave gives the thread high strength and excellent handling, superior to that of other suture materials.
