SELENIOMETHIONINE
Selenium is an essential trace element, constituent of numerous selenoproteins (selenium-containing proteins) that have enzymatic, structural, transport and storage roles.
Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress: it is a fundamental constituent of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxine reductase used physiologically by our body to counteract the harmful action of free radicals. It also supports normal thyroid function, as some key selenium-containing enzymes are implicated in the activation and regulation of thyroid enzymes.
Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal nails and hair, as well as to the normal function of the immune system. In humans, selenium can provide support to normal spermatogenesis as it is part of the composition of selenoproteins responsible for sperm integrity and motility.
