The dark-field condenser enables dark-field microscopy. Dark-field microscopy is used to obtain images of translucent, unstained specimens that do not absorb light well and are invisible in bright-field microscopy.

The numerical aperture of the dark-field condenser must be greater than the numerical aperture of the objective. Therefore, the condenser works with dry objectives with magnifications from 4x to 40x and an N.A. below 0.9.

This dark-field condenser is installed in the stand in place of the Abbe condenser.

To obtain a high-contrast image of the specimen using dark-field microscopy, it is recommended to use a cover glass 0.17 mm thick and a slide 1–1.2 mm thick.
