This dark-field condenser has a numerical aperture (N.A.) of 1.36–1.25. Its main use is to obtain high-contrast images of transparent, unstained specimens that cannot be observed using bright-field microscopy techniques. It is used in combination with objectives with magnifications greater than 20x, including objectives suitable for oil immersion.
Immersion oil on the condenser is necessary for both dry and oil-immersion objectives; otherwise, the light cannot reach the specimen. The MAGUS DF2 A condenser must be housed in the microscope frame in place of the Abbe condenser. The image will have maximum contrast when using cover slips 0.17 mm thick and microscope slides 1–1.2 mm thick.
