Turmeric is a plant with a rather imposing underground rhizome from which a yellow-orange powder is obtained used as a spice or food coloring. The main curcuminoids present in the rhizome are curcumin (which accounts for 70-75% of total curcuminoids), demethoxycurcumin (15-20%) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (about 3%).
Turmeric is traditionally used to support digestive and liver function by promoting the functionality of the digestive system. It has also been shown to support joint function and antioxidant action.
Curcumin and other curcuminoids have various beneficial properties. According to a brief description reported by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), curcumin blocks the formation of reactive oxygen species, inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) and other enzymes involved in inflammatory mechanisms and inhibits the transduction of cellular signals thanks to several mechanisms including the inhibition of protein kinase C. These activities could explain the effects of inhibition of cell proliferation and suppression of chemically induced carcinogenesis observed in animal models. In this regard, at the present time (December 2015), there are 6 clinical studies that are verifying the effects of curcumin in these areas but whose treatment is beyond the scope of this data sheet.
Curcumin, being a lipophilic molecule, is subject to this slow and variable absorption mechanism and characterized by a rapid degradative metabolism. When it comes to formulating a dietary supplement containing Curcumin, the main challenge is bioavailability. In recent years, several methods and strategies have been developed to improve the absorption and permanence of Curcumin and today Solgar launches a formulation with Curcumin with an exceptional and unique transport system that significantly improves its bioavailability.
Curcumin Redox in fact uses a unique, exclusive technology whose patent is in the process of being registered, thanks to which curcumin is more easily assimilated by the body because it mimics the natural digestive processes that allow the absorption of lipophilic compounds through a process of micellization. The micellar matrix is stable to gastric acidity and curcumin is released directly at the level of the intestinal wall for maximum absorption.
This innovative formulation has been the subject of a clinical study (Schiborr C et al. The oral bioavailability of curcumin from micronized powder and liquid micelles is significantly increased in healthy humans and differs between sexes. Mol Nutr Food Res. 2014 Mar; 58(3):516-27) which shows a 185-fold increased bioavailability compared to curcumin in native form. Even curcumin in micelles is absorbed 6.8 times faster than curcumin in native form.
More recent studies indicate that curcumin, since it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, could possess neuroprotective properties and support normal cognitive activity, suggesting its use as an integrative support where formulations with high bioavailability would find a logical rationale for use.
