Turmeric is a plant with a rather large underground rhizome, from which a yellow-orange powder is obtained and used as a spice or food coloring. The main curcuminoids present in the rhizome are curcumin (which represents 70-75% of total curcuminoids), demethoxycurcumin (15-20%) and bisdemethoxycurcumin (about 3%).

Turmeric is traditionally used to support digestive and liver function by promoting the functioning of the digestive system. It has also been shown to support joint function and have antioxidant effects.

Curcumin and the other curcuminoids have various beneficial properties. According to a brief description provided by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), curcumin blocks the formation of reactive oxygen species, inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) and other enzymes involved in inflammatory mechanisms, and inhibits cellular signal transduction through various mechanisms, including inhibition of protein kinase C. These activities could explain the effects of inhibition of cell proliferation and suppression of chemically induced carcinogenesis observed in animal models. In this regard, as of December 2015, there are 6 clinical studies investigating the effects of curcumin in these areas, but discussion of them is beyond the scope of this technical data sheet.

As curcumin is a lipophilic molecule, it is subject to this slow and variable absorption mechanism and is characterized by rapid degradative metabolism. When formulating a dietary supplement containing curcumin, the main challenge is bioavailability. In recent years, various methods and strategies have been developed to improve the absorption and persistence of curcumin, and Solgar is now launching a formulation with curcumin featuring an exceptional and unique delivery system that significantly improves its bioavailability.

Thanks to this technology, curcumin is more readily assimilated by the body because it mimics the natural digestive processes that enable the absorption of lipophilic compounds through a micellization process. The micellar matrix is stable in gastric acidity, and curcumin is released directly at the intestinal wall for maximum absorption.

This innovative formulation was the subject of a clinical study (Schiborr C et al. The oral bioavailability of curcumin from micronized powder and liquid micelles is significantly increased in healthy humans and differs between sexes. Mol Nutr Food Res. 2014 Mar;58(3):516-27) which found bioavailability to be increased by as much as 185 times compared with curcumin in its native form. Curcumin in micelles is absorbed 6.8 times faster than curcumin in its native form.

More recent studies indicate that curcumin, because it can cross the blood-brain barrier, may have neuroprotective properties and support normal cognitive activity, suggesting its use as a supplement where formulations with high bioavailability would provide a logical rationale for use.

Directions for use
