LACTOFERRIN: it is a multifunctional glycoprotein belonging to an important class of iron-chelating proteins called transferrins.
This protein occurs at high concentrations in milk and colostrum, as well as in various other secretions, in plasma and in the granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes that release it following various stimuli.
Lactoferrin, in addition to contributing directly to the host's defense against bacterial and viral infections, has immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activity, regulates iron absorption and cell growth and has various enzymatic activities.
• Binds to the lipopolysaccharide of Gram-negative bacteria or to the lipoteicoic acid of Gram-positive bacteria, via lactoferricin, causing lysis of the bacterial cell
• Sequesters iron and prevents it from being used by bacteria by inhibiting its growth
• Improves adhesion and bacterial internalization
• Modulates cell death induced by bacterial infection
• Induces apoptosis via lactoferrin
• Performs a synergistic action with other antimicrobial compounds
