Folic acid is involved in the process of cell division: as it acts as a cofactor in DNA formation, it comes into play whenever a cell divides. This function is of particular interest in rapidly regenerating tissues. Folate contributes tonormal amino acid synthesis and the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy: this supports the proper development of the fetus. In particular, folic acid supplementation increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the fetus. Folate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, while also supporting physiological formation and maturation of blood cells.
