Ethicon Prolene sutures are a non-absorbable, sterile, synthetic suture made of propylene. The thread is dyed blue for improved visibility.

Ethicon Prolene sutures are indicated for suturing and ligation of vessels and soft tissues, where the use of non-absorbable sutures is indicated. Prolene sutures are particularly indicated in cardiovascular, plastic, and ophthalmic surgery.

Cardiovascular surgeons have relied on Prolene sutures for over 40 years. Controlled linear elongation and high tensile strength are engineered into each thread. The special extrusion process ensures uniform gauge and smoothness.

Ethicon Prolene sutures exhibit minimal tissue reaction, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture in connective tissue. They are not absorbed and are not subject to degradation or weakening by tissue enzymes.

Prolene, being a monofilament suture, is not implicated in infection and has been successfully used in contaminated or infected wounds to eliminate or minimize sinus formation and suture extrusion. Furthermore, the lack of tissue adhesion has allowed Ethicon Prolene to be used with a pull-out technique for suture extraction.
