Ethicon silk sutures are designed for surgical applications that require a non-absorbable material. Suitable for suturing and ligating vessels and soft tissues, they are used in cardiovascular, plastic and ophthalmic surgery.

Natural silk initially causes an acute inflammatory reaction, followed by encapsulation of the suture by connective tissue fibers. Although non-absorbable, silk undergoes degradation in vivo, with a gradual loss of tensile strength over time. Therefore, it is not recommended when permanent tensile strength is needed.

The sutures are subjected to the Perma-Hand dewaxing process and stained black with a special wax mixture. This unique process ensures a uniform caliber and high strength, improving handling compared to other suture materials.
