134°C cycles are normally used for the sterilization of solid and ferrous materials. 121°C cycles are used for thermoplastics, textiles, and sensitive materials. Always sterilize the materials according to the instructions given by the device manufacturer.
How to Choose the Sterilizer:
Sterilization cycles are divided into classes based on the type of autoclavable material. The 3 classes are:
- Type B (class B): sterilization of bagged or unwrapped instruments, solids, type A cables (turbines, handpieces and devices with blind or small holes) and type B (cannulas and tubes with considerable passages) and porous products;
- Type S (class S): sterilization of type B hollow instruments (cannulas and tubes with considerable passages), small porous articles and solids wrapped and unbagged.
- Type N (class N): sterilization of solid instruments that are not wrapped
Unwrapped sterilized instruments are intended for immediate use or for storage, transportation, and non-sterile application to prevent cross-infection. It is essential that sterilization and associated equipment are used only for sterilization of the type of load for which they are designed.
The choice of sterilizer, sterilization cycle, or the quality of services provided may be inadequate for a particular load. Consequently, the suitability of a sterilization procedure for a particular product must be verified by validation.
