Ethicon silk sutures are designed for surgical applications requiring a non-absorbable material. Indicated for suturing and ligation of vessels and soft tissue, they are used in cardiovascular, plastic, and ophthalmic surgery.

Natural silk initially causes an acute inflammatory reaction, followed by encapsulation of the suture by connective tissue fibers. Although nonabsorbable, silk undergoes degradation in vivo, with a gradual loss of tensile strength over time. Therefore, it is not recommended when permanent tensile strength is required.

The sutures are subjected to the Perma-Hand dewaxing process and colored black with a special wax blend. This exclusive process ensures a uniform gauge and high strength, improving handling compared to other suture materials.
