Paraffin is also widely used in the aesthetic field to moisturize the skin and promote the absorption of specific lotions and masks.
Paraffin is a substance that occurs at room temperature in solid form, similar to wax, at temperatures over 50°C it melts and reaches the liquid state. The first applications of paraffin in the medical-therapeutic field date back to 1915 in the treatment of patients suffering from arthritis. Paraffin wax has the ability to store a large amount of heat and then release it slowly. Therefore, once heated, it fights the hardening of the muscles, stimulates blood circulation and ensures that the drugs that are used locally penetrate more easily into the skin.
The areas most treated with paraffin therapy are the joints (e.g. joints of the hands, feet, knee or elbow). The main therapeutic indications are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (in the subacute or chronic phase) and where stiffness is present, edema.
Paraffin is very suitable in preparation for re-education and manual therapy manoeuvres, post-immobilisation by plaster and post-traumatic rigidity.
The use of paraffin in the aesthetic field has a more recent history. In fact, it has been discovered that paraffin not only has a soothing effect on sore joints but also makes the skin very soft. Paraffin wax is able, in fact, to hydrate the skin and open the pores, ensuring that the healing and regenerating active ingredients contained in lotions or masks are better absorbed.
Biological and therapeutic effects:
- Thermal effect: the paraffin used at a temperature above 50 °C transfers heat to the underlying tissues, favoring an exogenous thermotherapy action.
- Mechanical effect: paraffin applied to the skin undergoes the transition from the liquid state to the solid state, during this passage it reduces its volume by exerting a beneficial action of compression of the tissues, especially enhancing the anti-oedema effect.
