ETHILON - Sterile non-absorbable monofilament sutures

The Ethilon suture by Ethicon is a monofilament, non-absorbable suture, composed of the long chain of aliphatic polymers Nylon 6 and Nylon 6,6; colored black for better visibility.
Ethilon is indicated for approximation and/or ligation of soft tissues, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurological surgery.

Ethilon causes a minimal inflammatory reaction in the tissues, followed by a gradual encapsulation of the suture in the fibrous connective tissues. Since nylon is not an absorbable material, the progressive hydrolysis of nylon in vivo could result in a gradual loss of tensile strength over time.

Because of the gradual loss of tensile strength that can occur over long periods of time in vivo, Ethilon should not be used where there is a prolonged need for force.
