This darkfield capacitor gives a 1.36–1.25 numerical aperture (N.O). Its main use is to obtain contrasted images for transparent, dye-free samples, which cannot be observed with brightfield microscopy techniques. It is used in combination with objectives with magnification over 20x, including objectives suitable for immersion in oil.

Immersion oil on the condenser is necessary for both dry and oil objectives, otherwise the light will not be able to reach the sample. The MAGUS DF2 A capacitor is housed in the microscope frame in place of the Abbe capacitor and centered by turning two screws. The image will have the most contrast with the use of 0.17 mm thick coverslips and 1–1.2 mm thick coverslips.
